Hallmark Cards and American Greetings are the largest producers of greeting cards in the world. In the United Kingdom, it is estimated that one billion pounds are spent on greeting cards every year, with the average person sending 55 cards per year.

In the United States, many adults traditionally mail Christmas cards to their friends and relatives in December. Many service businesses also send cards to their customers in this season, usually with a universally acceptable non-religious message such as "happy holidays" or "seasons's greetings.

The Historians say the custom of sending greeting cards is started by to the ancient Chinese who exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Egyptians in ancient times conveyed their greetings on papyrus scrolls. By the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards were being exchanged in Europe. The Germans are known to have printed New Year's greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400, and handmade paper Valentines were being exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s.

By the 1850s, the greeting card had been transformed from a relatively expensive, handmade and hand-delivered gift to a popular and affordable means of personal communication. Thanks to new advances in printing and mechanization. This was followed by new trends like Christmas cards, the first of which appeared in published form in London in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole hired artist John Calcott Horsley to design a holiday card that he could send to his friends and acquaintances. In the 1860s, companies like Marcus Ward & Co, Goodall and Charles Bennett began the mass production of greeting cards. They employed well-known artists such as Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane as illustrators and card designers.

There are two major categories of greeting cards, one is mass produced ( printed on offset printing machines etc.) and other is handmade greeting cards. Hand painted greeting cards is also a separate category of greeting cards. These cards are also available but this type of cards can not be mass- produced as each card has to be individually painted. So every hand painted card is unique.

Recycle Your Greeting Cards - Creatively

My mother had a Christmas morning ritual that she followed for decades: after the presents had been opened and while Christmas dinner was cooking, she would peel the Scotch tape from the wrapping paper, then carefully fold the paper and put it away for next year; then she’d get a pair of shears and cut all the greeting cards she’d received into various shapes, all destined to be used as gift tags for future Christmas presents.

Thankfully the routine recycling of paper has freed me from the guilt of throwing away gift wrap; but I still think the whole greeting-card-to-gift-tag idea is a good one. You might want to try it yourself. Simply cut large shapes from the Christmas cards you get—snowmen, clusters of poinsettias, angels, messages like Season’s Greetings, and so on—and store them in a small box. You might want to use a hole punch to put a small hole in one end of the card. If you’ve got a card with an abstract design, simply cut the card into large squares or rectangles and, again, punch a hole in one corner. Just use the blank side of the tag for your writing.

You may receive a few cards that you want to keep, either because they are beautiful in themselves or because they contain a special message from the sender. If you want to save the card because the front of it has an attractive design, mount it, put an attractive mat around it in a contrasting or complementary color, and frame it. If you want to save both the front and inside of the card, cut the card apart on the fold, mount the two pieces side by side, and then mat and frame. You may want to bring these pictures out for hanging only on the holidays, or keep them displayed year-round.

The tags made from Christmas cards can be much more attractive than most of the ones you can buy in a store, and displaying framed cards are a much better way to hang on to a keepsake than stuffing them in away in a drawer somewhere.

It’s a fun, creative way to recycle.

How to Give Romantic Greeting Cards - Make These Greeting Cards a Surprise

When you're going to give your loved one romantic greeting cards you must practice the fine art of surprise. Cards like this are most effective when they catch your spouse off guard, then the true appeal of your card can work its magic.

Romantic greeting cards are often pre-made, making it easy for the giver to pick a loving and creative card. However, if you want you can customize your own internet greeting cards or print greeting cards for that special someone you can also go this route. No matter how you opt to create or choose your romantic greeting, it's important that it be a surprise. Here are a few ways to ensure that your greeting cards are surprises.

1. Start a fight a few days before the big romantic greeting card day over nothing. Don't talk to your partner until that day, then show up on the doorstep with a dozen roses if you partner is a girl or their favorite pizza if your partner is a guy and the card attached.

2. Several days before you want to give your romantic greeting cards, start acting extremely forgetful, forgetting all important birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. Then, when your partner has given up all hope of a romantic evening, pounce on them with the card and a lovely dinner.

3. Call your partner up and tell them you have something grave to discuss. 'Would they mind meeting you in a very public place for a quick lunch?" Your partner will come to the meeting expecting the worst and you can surprise them with romantic greeting cards and some sort of heart shaped desserts.

4. Send your partner a series of strange cards, such as Get Well cards or Sorry About Your Loss cards. When they are fully convinced you've lost your mind, leave a series of romantic greeting cards scattered around their bedroom. You may or may not be on the bed with whipped cream, depends on your craziness.

5. Act as if you don't like your in-laws. Then on one family occasion have your in-laws give your spouse the romantic greeting cards you intend for him or her. Your spouse will be caught completely off guard because he or she was expecting a card from their parents and instead got a card from you. It will show that you don't dislike your in-laws as much as you indicated if their in on the little ruse.

Hopefully, these five nuggets of wisdom will help you give romantic greeting cards in the best ways possible. If you put your mind to it you'll probably be able to come up with some fun ways of your own.

The Gallery of Life - What is the spiritual purpose of fine art prints as greeting cards?

Greeting cards. Have you ever really pondered our real intention when sending greeting cards? Of course, you might reply. We want to celebrate; we want to offer inspiration; we want to console; we want to communicate. We often choose landscape photography or nature photography as the basic foundation of our greeting as these scenes display a fabric of life that is both beautiful and peaceful.

Yet, our intentions with greeting cards can have a spiritual purpose. Our greeting can inspire a be-attitude: be happy, be hopeful, be courageous, be comforted, be aware that you are not alone. These are all attributes of character development and reminders of our strength and courage during times of celebration and during times of adversity.

Ultimately, greeting cards connect us to each other as immediate family, extended family and a global family. So, when choosing unique greeting cards, have a new level of consciousness concerning its potential. The magic of your selected beautiful scene and inspirational thoughts may literally be your contribution to change our world, and make it better, one person at a time.
